Bangkok River and the Wat Arun, Temple of the Dawn

Monday, May 30th, 2011

After spending about 1 hour at Wat Pho temple, I accidentally found out that Im very close to the mighty Chao praya river in Bangkok. This river is so long that people in Bangkok also use this to cross or travel from one place to another using an extensive river boat system. Historically, they say that the river plays a very important role in forming what is Thailand today.

Surprisingly, on the other side of the river, I saw a very beautiful temple, as the locals told me, its called the Temple of the Dawn and its one of the most pictureque places to be while in the city. To find out why, I walked towards a local ferryboat station. One ferry ride costs about 2.5 BAHT.

There are many boats that travel around the river, one is the riverboat express or the river taxi’s. Rivers are great also for tourist if they want to see the old and new Bangkok as many temples are located near the river and the canals. In the Philippines, I hope the Pasig river will eventually be like this.

WAT ARUN TEMPLE

Wat Arun has an entrance of 50Baht, very affordable and the same price for locals and tourist unlike in India.

The first glimpse of the temples entrance. The architecture is just awesome and they say that this is Bangkok’s most popular landmark. But because of some personal reasons, I have to guard my heart before entering a temple. I only appreciate its architecture and nothing else.

Bangkok City Tour on 2 wheels

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Many tour operator offers a half day city tour around Bangkok for $50 which includes a half day city tour, english speaking guide and in a luxury coach but if you ask me, that is very expensive and the best option for me is DIY or Do It Yourself tour around this amazing city. I woke up early in the morning and hired a motorcycle, in the Philippines we call it “single” or solo. Another option is the famous tuktuk but the motorcycle is much cheaper and it can go to any places quicker.

For 200 BAHT my trip starts now!

Photobucket

For today, I have only 5 things in mind where to go including Wat Pho, Grand Palace, Emerald Temple, Wat Arun and Bangkok river tour. Bangkok has many temples to view but these are the most recommended. This time, I just had a time of my life, unlike some of my trips thats allows too much rush and now, I just wanna feel more relax, no need to rush.

On the way to What Po, I saw the Democracy Monument in Bangkok. I remember this one time I saw on TV during Bangkok’s political turmoil that happened few years ago.

At Wan Pho, you have to pay 50 BAHT entrance fee. Here I was amazed by the structures, its so beautiful.

Since I started out late, theres nothing I can do more but to explore the shopping district in Bangkok where I am located and great thing is that popular shopping centers are connected to each other and the best means to do that is through walking.

First Meal in Bangkok

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

After a long day comes dinner time and what best way to do this is to eat like a local in Bangkok, Thailand.

Photobucket

Its easy to find Thai street food especially when you are staying in the shopping district of Bangkok where my hostel is centrally located. There are plenty of fresh Thai food cooking here and there’s one right beside our hostel.

 Photobucket

Here is my meal for the night, pork barbecue with a special thai vinegrette for B35. At first I thought that Thais dont eat pork but they have plenty pork menus around. Its so delicious, it seems to have some special marinade, the pork is so tender and the sauce has a right spice on it.

LUB D SIAM SQUARE review

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Photobucket

Lud D Siam Square is probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed around South East Asia, it has the characteristics of the hostel for fun and active backpacker like me. The place is in fact located at the bustling shopping district of Bangkok, in minutes you will find yourself sorrounded by gigantic malls such as MBK, Siam Discovery, Center of Siam and Paragaon.

 Photobucket Photobucket

The interiors of the hostel are very colorful and vibrant.Upon entrance, you will be greeted by the friendly staff and they have plenty of computers for internet use for free for the guests. The feeling is just different at Lub D, you will never be left off, there are many guest from different countries and mostly are youths.

They have a separate room for entertainment where you can watch movies or DVD such as this one above. I like sleeping on this very soft and comfortable bed. I wish I could have this one back on my room, it made me feel so relaxed.

First time in Bangkok, Thailand

Photobucket

The first glimpse of Bangkok, Thailand is their massive and beautiful airport, Survarnabhumi International Airport. I just love airports because it simply tells how beautiful a country can be, it remains as the first impression and the last impression of tourists and I heard so  many reviews about this airport that its really great, in fact, its one of the best airports in Asia.

 Photobucket Photobucket

Airports for me are tourist attractions. When I have more time,  I used to spend my free time in the airport, exploring their shops and facilities. Bangkok Airport is just one of the beautiful airports I’ve been and it definetely left a big mark on me.

Surf, call, text at 30,000 ft with Air Asia

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Photobucket

For the first time in my life, I rode a plane that allows passengers to surf the internet, call and text your families, friends at 30,000 feet thanks to Air Asia on my trip from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, Thailand.

 Photobucket

Now passengers can stay connected wherever they are. This service from Air Asia is not available in legacy carriers but they were able to offer this service. However, this comes a bit pricey. As for me, I prefer to play on my tab than pay extra but this will definitely be a help for some people who don’t mind the price as long as they keep in touch with their loved ones. Photobucket

Dont tell my mother I’m in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Shhhh… Dont tell my mother I’m in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

 Photobucket

Dont Tell my Mother is my favorite travel show on National Geographic Channel. Why I love this show is because it tells something about me personally. For 3 years I have been secretly traveling around the Philippines and Asia without the knowledge of my mother. Why? Its because Im the only child and if I tell my mom I will go to places, I believe she wouldnt allow me and I wouldn’t want my mom to worry about me when I’m somewhere else.

Dont tell my mom ha, thanks!

Experience shopping at the largest mall of Borneo, 1BORNEO in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Since I have no money for shopping and I have a flight to Kuala Lumpur, I just watched movie here at their cinema. Here I watched THOR. On their cinema’s, they have 2 subtitle translations on the screen on Malaysian and Chinese language, sometimes its a bit disturbing when you have these but later your eyes gets used to it and will now focus on the movie rather on the subtitles.

Kota Kinabalu Walking Tour Part 2

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

Photobucket

Finally I saw this marlin statue, this landmark is always featured in Cebu Pacifics’ Smile Magazine and this is just located beside the harbor bay.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

KK also has huge malls and one of this is SURIA SABAH, its a massive 8 storey but not all shops are open, there are still plenty of vacant stalls but some big brands have opened in this mall. At the top floor, it is where their cinema is located.
