Tsunami Alert in Siargao Island, Philippines

The world was in shock yesterday when an earthquake so powerful created a huge tidal wave off the coast of Japan triggering tsunami warning signs across the pacific rim including USA,Chile,Guatemala, Peru, Indonesia,Micronesia and the Philippines.

The Philippines being one of the countries that embraces the mighty Pacific Ocean was one of the countries who responded immediately to the call for evacuation. Certain provinces especially in the Eastern seaboard like Aurora, Cagayan Valley, Batanes, Camarines Sur, Albay and in Surigao was on hightened alert after what happened in Japan although there were only minor movements in the waves around the coastal towns.

During my recent trip to Siargao Island come a very familiar signboard that struck me. Around the island, you can see several signs that will lead you to the evacuation routes just like the photo’s above. Siargao Island, being the island that face the pacific ocean should be prepared when a colossal disaster like this strikes. For sure, the island will be faced out if a major tsunami will come. I noticed that theres not much mountainous land in the area, it was just a small hill and even the chocolate hills in Bohol is even more elevated than in Siargao.

Surigao City is geographically located at the northern tip of Mindanao and considered to be the gateway to Siargao, the surfing capital as well as to the beautiful Dinagat Islands. The city also boasts to have the biggest mangroves in Mindanao and today, it is one of the most prosperous cities in Mindanao.

Last night storm was really strong, while I was inside my hotel room I felt very nervous because it felt like the storm is making the waves go higher and might create huge waves but thankfully when I woke up, I was welcomed by a beautiful sunshine, perfect day for surfing but unfortunately there were no surfers around.

For a non-surfer, Siargao can be a bit boring. I mean, the beach is great but there are many beaches around the country that has more life to it. To add, Siargao for me is a tourist trap– transportation to GL town is difficult and expensive then meals here are expensive especially at Th Boardwalk but it was delicious.
