If you love a fast paced environment thrive on excitement and have a desire to help people a career as an ER nurse may be a good fit. One of the most exciting and challenging area in Nursing is the Emergency Room. Most patients that are admitted in the hospital comes from the ER. The ER nurse handles different cases such as pediatric, medical, surgical and OB Gyne emergencies, its not easy to be an ER Nurse because you are the first line care provider on these patients. You are mostly higher risk of nosocomial because of an undiagnosed or untreated medical condition like tuberculosis or pneumonia. ER nurses must handle patients quickly, must have a good assessment skills and clinical eye so that we can recognize life-threatening problem as soon as possible and rapidly make appropriate care. One of the most important skill I learned is to be more resourceful, you can use anything you can see in the complex to help the patient especially when things run out of supply.
Emergency nursing is a specialty area of the nursing profession like no other. To provide quality patient care for people of all ages, emergency nurses must possess both general and specific knowledge about health care to provide quality patient care for people of all ages. Emergency nurses must be ready to treat a wide variety of illnesses or injury situations, ranging from a sore throat to a heart attack.
ER Staff having fun at work
In other countries, they also call ER Nursing as Trauma Nursing because of the special handling of patients especially when trauma or accidents occur. This is to minimize pain, deformities and fascilite recuperation of wound. Usually, patients have active bleeding due to open wounds, some may have fractures and for possible direct admission to Operating room. Unforgettable patients are those with retained foreign body such as knife on their body.
Life can be stressful at times at the ER but can be rewarding also.
I hope these encouraged you to be part of our EMERGENCY ROOM someday. You will not only learn a lot or improve your skills but have fun at the same time.
