Be an IV Therapist!

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

When I was a child, thinking of just a hospital makes me worry alot because I fear injections, needles and blood. I couldn’t hardly imagine the pain of being injected and the blood oozing out. Well, we really don’t know the time, I became a nurse who does the "horPhotobucketrifying" thing to the patients. Life is full of surprises!

So if you are a nurse, make sure you undergo the Intravenous Therapy Training by the Association of Nursing Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) which is held every now and then at Davao Medical Center. Should you wish to inquire, you may visit them at JP Laurel Avenue or call 227-2731.

IV therapy is giving of a liquid substances directly into a vein. The word intravenous simply means vein. Compared with other routes of administration like oral, rectal or intramuscular, the intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications through out the body including blood transfusions and lethal injections.

In sum, IV THERAPY…

  • Put fluids in the body that can’t be given by eating or drinking
  • Give medications that can’t be given by mouth or that need to work quickly
  • Give blood products
  • Give special nutrition like TPN
  • Provide a way for blood to be drawn

The training usually is 3 days. Then you will start your completion of the requirements at DMC. If you need my help for personal demonstration, you may leave a comment here.
