Feels like going to the Gym

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

When I go on work at Medicine Main at DMC, it felt like I’m going to the gym because of the heavy work load, there are so many charts to carry-out, sometimes we get up to 56 patients and we are just 2 nurse and 1 nursing aide. There are also many questions and from the watchers that should be entertained. At Medicine ward, we have 16 IMCU beds or patients with close monitoring and some of them have terminal diseases.

The action comes when the patient goes under cardiac arrest and we have to do CPR until the doctor comes and reassess the patient or pronounce the patients dealth. The CPR can burn to you a hundred calories and all that running to borrow equipments from other wards burns you even more calories. Sometimes, we only have little time to take a seat and relax. Even during lunch time, still there are many patients and watchers need that we have to attend to.

There was a time that sometimes there are 2-4 patients undergoing cardiac arrest at the same time or almost few intervals from the other. Thats why, trainees and students are a big help because we just have to delegate some task to them with our supervision. For trainees, mostly they do the medications while the students the vital signs taking and the basic ward works.

At Medicine main, we are on 12 hours shift that means we have schedule like from 7AM-7PM or 7PM-7AM and 10AM-10PM. My favorite shift is 7PM to 7AM because at night, I can relax since there are no procedures, only few doctors order to carry-out just admissions from the Emergency department.
