First Day High

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

How did you celebrate the New Year? While most of you are in the  comfort of your home, with your family and feasting on the medja noche. I celebrated my New Year at the hospital. Yesterday, January 1 was the first day of my work as a paid staff nurse at Davao Medical Center. Away from my family, I slept early as 10PM last New Years eve.

Photobucket It was a very busy or toxic day at the Medicine ward at DMC. I was the Charge Nurse for the very first time and as a charge nurse, you are responsible for the whole ward and you have to attend to the watchers and patients demands. About 9AM, the adventure starts when one patient is on cardiac arrest. Luckily, I have Sir Joel, RN my senior nurse  and Sir Ryan, nursing aide are with me to help me out. It was my first time to assist for intubation.

Its not easy to be a nurse coz its the life that we are dealing with. Not for long, before midday hits, another patient had cardiac arrest. As an SOP, we have to  perform basic life support or CPR and give drugs like epinephrine or atropine sulfate to keep the heart beating. Patient wasn't revived and the doctor proclaimed the patient dead.

It was really a first day High. As Sir Joel would say, "Nabinyagan kami" or we were "baptized " during our first day of work. It was super busy that we didn't have time to have lunch together plus I still have plenty of charts of carry out and attend to watchers demand.

I am so thankful that after the end of the day, I completed my task. Although there are minor errors on charts, by next time I will be able to master becoming a great nurse at Medicine Ward-Davao Medical Center.  This is really a great experience for me.
