I submitted my requirements for training at Davao Medical Center last Monday and I will start my work on May 15 - September 8. Thinking about it makes me ambivalent because I really dont know what to expect and if I am ready for that big responsibility to deliver quality care to your clients. The big question is "Can I stay long in the hospital?" or would I resign on my first month of work. Hahah. Lets see about that?
However, one thing that I am thrilled about is my new white uniform. I could imagine that I am walking along the hospital with my new white uniform, it seems to be a fashion statement than working in a hospital. Sometimes I also miss wearing white uniform but I would prefer a scrub suit now because of summer season. Moreover, I am also thinking about the nursing students who will be under my supervision, its flattering because to think about it, I was once a nursing student. Looking at them would reminish the old times both good and bad memories.
In addition, there is one thing that bothers me about my stay in Davao. Its my living expenses which seems to be more than when I had my review even though I live in the humblest lifestyle and trying to save a money although its really hard to live and work in Davao in P1000/week allowance considering the food, transporation and simple liesures like internet and chat. In fact, since February I haven't watched any movies at the cinemas. I felt that its time for me to earn money for my own but there are no staff posiitons available in fact we have to pay the hospital to get a training.
I arrived at Kidapawan City yesterday around 1:30PM and I immediately worked on my clearances from the court and fiscal as part of my additional requirements on my training experience at Davao Medical Center. My mom came with me during that time to help me speed up my clearances because she has so many friends in that offices. So finally, I was able to comply with all the requirements and hopefully by monday I will pass all the requirements.
Moving on, Im ambivalent with regards to my work since this would be my first time experience outside school. I felt anxious now because I dont know what to expect considering also the voluminous patients DMC cater which is unparalleled compared to my undergrad experience here in the province of Cotabato. However, I am also feeling elated because I could really practice my profession. Most of my friends have already worked and I envy them so much for their new acquired skills even though I spent my past months reviewing for foreign nursing exams.
Wow, this would really be a challenge for me. I chose the General ward training and perhaps later on shift into the next level probably on perioperative nursing or emergency room nursing. On the other hand, my most dreaded area ever is the Maternal and Child nursing. Hope and pray that I won't commit any accidents especially in giving medications. I recall the issue happened last month when a student nurse accidentally gave a potassium chloride (KCl) bolus to an infant. We all know that KCl is the substance used in lethal injection and must not be given in bolus. Whew! Im glad some concepts are still fresh on my mind.
It was such a hot day in Davao City, even at 9am it feels like a hot desert as if I was in the great Sahara desert. Wouldn't it be for my mineral water, I would probably die due to heat exaustion or worst heat stroke. It is really summer and the thing that I worried most about is skin darkening. My skin is now ugly, so much for my 1 ton of whitening lotion I rubbed over my body for this past years just damaged by the sun's UV rays in a split of a second. On second thought probably I should buy gluthatione capsules, hahah.
However, despite that nasty cancer-causing UV light, I got the news that I passed the IELTS Examination. I was so happy to know the result, this is another first step on practicing my nursing profession abroad. My next examination would be NCLEX-RN which hopefully I could take it this year in Hong Kong. Since I passed the Philippine Nursing board examination I still continue to read books to refresh the concepts in nursing which would perhaps help me in the most expensive examination that I would take-NCLEX. Heheh. I have also plans of taking the CGFNS exam while still my momentum is on high level.
Aside from the learnings and skills I acquired from the Red Cross seminar, I also developed sunburn for the second time around and skin darkening. Hahaha. The first time this year was when I went to Paradise Island resort during pre-holy week. However, I still have no regrets I joined because the experience is priceless and I gained new friends.
Last Monday, after learning that I passed the qualifying examination at Davao Medical Center (DMC), I immediately complied the given requirements. Finally, I will really work. I was dismayed at Davao Doctors Hospital and Brokenshire Hospital since they did not call me back after I posted my resume. I have heard that there is a palakasan system in the 2 hospitals I mentioned. DMC would be a better alternative.
The following day, I had a tough time at DMC. I was amazed with the voluminous patient they cater everyday. I arrived at the hospital early in the morning and the cashier lane is now packed with lots of people seeking quality health care. Luckily, I found out that I will have my laboratory done at the DMC-IC or Industrial Clinic. However, there are still hundreds of people at the clinic mostly students for mandatory drug testing for Psychiatric Nursing exposure.
Hahah, ano ba ginawa ko this past few weeks at di ako nakapag update ng blog ko. Well, the most interesting happened to me last week is I have attended the seminar conducted by the Red Cross Davao Chapter which is the Basic Life Support and First Aid plus Water safety. I had so much fun in the seminar, it was an experience worth remembering. Through that seminar, I learned alot of skills that will help me enhance my nursing skills and be useful to the community.
During the seminar, we had a lecture regarding Basic Life Support, we were taught the process of responding to emergencies. Sometimes we are overwhelmed in helping people as if we are superheroes during emergencies however little do we know that we could produce more harm to the victims if we employ wrong techniques especially when the patient had Spinal cord injury, it could create a permanent disability.
The following day we were taught how to do bandaging, it was an arduous task for me although I managed to pull it through at the end of the day. The most difficult task would be creating a square knot on the bandage. After I got home, I used my chair to act as a patient to practice my new acquired skills.
